'' Listen up kittens. This is very important. '' Champ mewed to the the, eager young cats. Champ was a large gray tom with green eyes. '' Our family has been in this manor for generations, holding up the one tradition that we are so proud of today. Can anyone tell me this tradition? '' Champ asked. The tree kits started to talk at the same time, but Oreo, a black and white tom, spoke first. '' We hunt the mice here! We make sure the home is mice free for the humans! '' he mewed proudly, puffing out his tiny chest. '' Precisely! Mice are horrible little creatures! Causing trouble for the humans... So it is our job to make sure they don't do that. In return, the humans feed us and take care of us. '' Champ went on, '' I expect each of you to keep this tradition alive! '' he finished proudly, puffing out his chest a bit not unlike Oreo.
'' I'm going to be the best mouse hunter anyone has ever seen! '' Lily squeaked as she went into a stalking position, her tail lashing back and forth. Lily looked a bit like Champ, she was a gray tabby with dark green eyes. '' In your dreams Lily! '' Al mewed as he jumped onto his sister and they began to tussle. Al was a long, sleek furred ginger tom. Oreo shook his head, '' I am afraid both of you are mistaken. I'm going to be the best mouse hunter the world has ever seen! '' he mewed and joined in the fight. Champ watched the three kits play. He was so proud, already so eager to hunt mice just like their ancestors! Then Champ realized something, no someone was missing. Mint was late again.
Mint sprinted toward the fire place. She was so late! And this was the fourth time this week.... Mint was a brown tabby she~cat with dazzling blue eyes, she was also the runt of the litter and her siblings wouldn't let her forget it. She skidded to a halt in front of the fire place to find her brothers and sister playing and Champ watching. Champ looked at her, she could tell he was angry with her. '' Late again Mint? '' he mewed, Oreo, Lily, and Al stopped playing to glare at her. '' Why were you late Mint? '' he asked, Mint looked down at her paws when she answered, '' I forgot, I'm sorry Champ. '' Champ looked like he was just about to continue and forget about the whole thing, then Lily piped in. '' Liar! Mint's lying Champ! '' she hissed. Mint's heart dropped, she knew Champ would believe her precious siblings instead of her. '' Ya Champ, don't believe her. Unless you want to believe that she just forgot for the fourth time this week! '' Oreo added, glaring at Mint. Mint shuffled her paws, still avoiding Champ's eyes. '' What were you doing that was so important, that you forgot about lessons? '' Champ asked with icy calmness. Mint wish he would yell instead. '' I- I was- '' she began but got cut off by Al, her siblings always teamed up against her, '' I can tell you Champ. She was staring outside again into the forest. '' he mewed accusingly.
Mint suddenly became interested in the chair across the room. She couldn't ignore the truth in Al's words... '' Mint, is that true? '' Champ asked, his voice angry, and was that disappointment Mint heard too? Finlay Mint got the nerve to look Champ in the face, '' Yes Champ, I was looking outside..... It was only for a little bit I was watching a bird! There's nothing wrong with that! '' Mint said, but she knew that she was already in trouble. '' Class dismissed. '' Champ said suddenly, Oreo, Lily, and Al all scampered away, but Mint saw them hide behind the couch to hear what was coming. '' Except for you Mint. '' he said, just as Mint had expected. '' This was the fourth time this week! And are you telling me, your missing classes, to stare outside? '' he asked, his voice shaking with rage. Mint flattened her ears, preparing to defend herself but Champ went on. '' Remember that little lesson we had, a long time ago when you were very little? The one where we talked about not going outside? '' he asked, Mint shifted her gaze back to her paws when she answered. '' Yes Champ, I do. But I don't see the problem if I just look outside, I'm not really going to leave the house. '' she knew it was a weak defense, but she had to try something.... To her surprise, Champ laughed but it wasn't a happy laugh. '' You don't see the problem? You are missing classes Mint! Soon you will be missing meals, then after that you will be to busy staring outside to even catch mice! And you know what you're staring at? The same thing that took your mother! '' Champ went on angrily. Mint's heart skipped a beat, Champ didn't usually mention their mother....
Suddenly, she felt angry with him, how dare he speak about her mother, his mate that way? '' Well at least she wasn't afraid of the wind! She was brave enough to even set a paw outside! I don't care if I go down her path, it would be better than living here! '' she mewed, her voice rising, she looked up at Champ's face, she knew she had gone to far, he was livid. '' That's it Mint. I have tried to be patient, I haven't given you that bad of a punishment yet, but you have asked for it. You have three days in the basement. '' he said, his voice shaking with rage. '' Now! '' he hissed. Mint's heart sank, not the basement.... She had never been in the basement. But she knew it was a horrible place. Al had told her that it was as dark as a night with no moon or stars, and that it was ice cold down there. And Oreo went on and on about the rats. Oreo had said that the humans don't go down there because of the rats, and not even cats go down there because of them. Mint shuddered, three days? Down there?
'' Go! '' Champ hissed and he nudged her toward the the hall way. '' Fine! I'm going! '' she hissed. She was surprised that her legs worked at all when she began to walk. Would she die down there?
